How it all began

The No Child Left Behind legislation is a very imporant piece of legislation that affects all who are in the education field, primarily at the primary level. (Elementary, Middle, and High Schools) This group includes teachers, students, principals, and even the janitarial staff. Because this legislation directly affects so many people serious thought must be put in deciding if it is effective and helpful. This legislation was brought on by the Bush administration as an effort to improve education, mainly targeting low performing schools. In theory, all children would receive the opportunity to learn in the best environment possible and have the resources neccisary to succeed. This hass hopefully been the goal of all educators, but some simply do not have the resources to give a student the best education possible, thus we have the No Child Left Behind Plan.

Here is a great website that gives a lot of general information on the issue and why it's important.- http://www.ed.gov/nclb/landing.jhtml

The No Child Left Behind Act did seem like a really good idea but as you said it was poorly funded. What do you think you would propose to help this Act or enhance is capabilities to its full potential?

First, I believe that this act needs to be given more funding. It has proven to be unsuccessful without the approriate funding. Second, I believe that yes students should be given the best environment to work and learn in, but the schools that are not making their "goals" should receive more money and attention from the government instead of the negative attention that is being brought now. If a school fails to meet its goals two years in a row then the students at that school are given the opportunity to go to other area schools. If the school is failing to function then there must be something changed to it instead of the government simply giving up on it.

Given that both presidential candidates call for reform of the act, do you think it should simply be funded better, or as the candidates say, be reformed entirely?

I personally believe that it should be reformed completly. In my next post I will go into detail how the legislation should be reworked to best help our nation and the educating of its citizens.

Cam,
I'm really interested in this issue and have a question that you hopefully you can clear up for me.
Since No Child Left Behind ensures all students a standard education, does that mean that gifted student's education will receive less funding, therefore creating this No Child Left Behind, No Child Gets Ahead situation?
